GEO basics

What is GEO? And how is it different from SEO?

When your customer asks ChatGPT for the best provider in your field, they get one answer instead of ten links. The new question is no longer where you rank, but whether you are mentioned at all.

Customers no longer open ten links and compare them. They get a written answer that names a few brands, and they usually pick from those. I saw this with Qoyod: when ChatGPT was asked, in Arabic, for the best Saudi websites offering free accounting templates, it did not return a list of links. It wrote an answer that put Qoyod first. A brand that is not named in that answer is not in the race at all, even if it ranks well on Google.

The definition in two lines

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization: optimizing content for generative answer engines. It is the work of making ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews understand your brand, trust it, and mention or cite it in their answers.

SEO vs GEO

SEOGEO
GoalA higher position in a list of linksBeing mentioned and cited inside the answer itself
What is measuredRankings, clicks and visitsWhether the brand is mentioned, how it is described, and whether the facts are right
Content shapePages built around keywordsShort passages that start with the answer and are easy to quote
Key signalsLinks, content, speed and user experienceA clear entity, structured data, and consistent sources that describe the brand the same way

This does not mean SEO is over. Answer engines often rely on search results and on the web pages themselves to build an answer, so a sound technical base and good content are still required. The difference is that GEO adds a layer on top: your page must be easy for a language model to understand and quote.

What makes an engine mention one brand and not another?

Nobody outside these companies knows the exact formula, and anyone who promises a guarantee is overstating. But from my work on real brands in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, four things keep recurring:

  1. A clear entity. Does the model know who you are and which category you belong to? A brand described once as a freelance platform and once as a payroll system will be classified wrongly.
  2. Content that starts with the answer. A paragraph that opens with a direct definition is easier to quote than one that opens with a general introduction.
  3. Technical structure and structured data. Fast pages, clear internal links, and Schema that tells the engine what each page is.
  4. Consistent sources. Your site, your profiles on platforms and third-party sites all describe the brand the same way.

A real example: Forlanso

Forlanso is a UAE remote-work management platform: digital contracts, payroll and payments. AI tools classified it as a freelance marketplace like Upwork, which meant it was compared with the wrong competitors and missing from the right questions. After a four-week framework (a GEO foundation, then an audit of engine answers, then quotable content, then tracking tools), all four major engines classified it as a remote workforce management system, and the Forlanso site became the first source cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity. Details are in the full case study.

What your brand can do this week

  1. Write ten questions your customers actually ask, in Arabic and English, and try them in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode.
  2. For each question, record: was your brand mentioned? With what description? And who was mentioned instead?
  3. Write one fixed two-sentence definition of the brand and use it on your site and on your company profiles.
  4. Rewrite your five most important pages so that each main paragraph starts with the direct answer.
  5. Add the right Schema markup (Organization, FAQPage and others), and make sure search crawlers can reach your pages.

Frequently asked questions

Does GEO remove the need for SEO?

No. SEO is the foundation that gives you a chance to appear in many AI answers, and GEO is an extra layer on top of it.

How long does it take to improve visibility in AI answers?

It depends on the brand, the field and the competition. In Forlanso's case the framework took four weeks to change the classification, but I do not promise a fixed timeline.

Can my brand be guaranteed a mention in ChatGPT answers?

No. These engines change, and their answers can differ from one run to the next. What I can do is raise the likelihood that your brand is understood and mentioned accurately, and measure it regularly.

Do you know how AI answers your customers' questions today?

I test your customers' real questions on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode, and show you where your brand appears and what it takes to become the answer.
